(Jessa Re-engagement for anon) Why am I crying?
"I know it looks a little bit spare now, but when I get more furniture it’ll look better," Tessa said in answer to Jem’s wandering eyes. Truthfully, he hadn’t even been thinking of her lack of furnishings, which by the way he thought lent an air or elegance to the place, but of her sitting across from him. Jiggling her foot slightly and eating her slice and a half of cake with urgency, as if it would be snatched away at any second. She had bought it at her favorite bakery just down the street as a treat for his visiting her.
She put down her fork, drank her tea and regarded him. “Jem? Are you alright?”
He had been staring at her for the past few minutes and she thought he looked nauseous. Truthfully he was, but he had been looking for the words he had been wanting to say for what felt like an immensely long time. Taking a bite just for something to do, he chewed mechanically, thinking of another Tessa. The one that had walked in his room that night and into his heart. She was still the same Tessa. He supposed it was now or never. “Tessa.”
"Hmm?" She ate another bite and looked at him concernedly. "Can I get you anything Jem? An aspirin? You look positively pale."
She dropped her fork.
He panicked. “I love you Tessa. I’ve always loved you. Even when I couldn’t say it, I still thought it. I know I couldn’t- I can’t- I mean, I can’t offer you much but me and it’s not a whole lot but-“
Tessa moved towards him and he stood up and in their haste, they collided and he felt her trembling in his arms, looking up at him with a mixture of adoration and fierce determination. “Yes, yes yes…” She jumped up and down and kissed him and it was like they had never been apart. Two lovers picking up where they left off without a moment’s hesitation. “James,” they seemed to melt into each other and only broke apart so that he fumble in his pockets for the ring he had been carrying around for what seemed like eternity and slid it shakily onto her finger. “I’ve always loved you.”
Tessa rested her forehead on the crook of his neck, elated and pained at the sincerity in his voice. “Me too.”
